AEA Meetup July 20, 2017

AEA Meetup You might wonder, “What is a “Meetup?” Wikipedia of course has an excellent definition: “Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest.” Each month a different topic will be explored. Join us for our next Meetup on July 20, 2017 with Sunil Ahuja on Personal Development: Integrating the Enneagram and Spiral Dynamics Join us for an interactive meetup to learn how these two systems can intersect and enhance personal development! The Enneagram is primarily seen as a “horizontal” system, exploring the characteristics of different personality types. However, its true power lies as a path of personal development. David Daniels and Russ Hudson have referred to this. A.H. Almaas has explored this in detail as an integral aspect of his Diamond Approach system. Last May, Deborah Ooten presented a talk to our meetup on how a “vertical” development system called Spiral Dynamics can integrate with the Enneagram to provide further insight into our own personality and development process. Think of “horizontal” as a system that has buckets that are distinct, but not, in any way, better than each other. In “vertical” systems, we move from one level to the next, and at each level we experience expanding capacity. We all intuitively understand that we grow, and that we are not quite the same person we were 10, or 5, or even a year ago. What most of us don’t know is that the process of adult development has been studied and researched by a number of teachers and researchers along different dimensions. Ken Wilber refers to these dimensions as “Lines” of development. We develop along cognitive, emotional, spiritual, moral, and many other lines. The second critical thing to understand is that we develop in “Stages.” The development process does not occur in a straight line, but more like a step function. When our life conditions change, we have to grow to meet those conditions. When our capacities now meet our external conditions, we can plateau and settle for a while, till the universe demands our next spurt. Spiral Dynamics is the system that Ken Wilber chose to use as a example of the development process in many of his books. While primarily a “Values” line, it describes cognitive, emotional, and other aspects of each stage, and so is a great introductory model to start looking at adult development. We will spend some time reviewing each stage of development, and how each stage integrates with each enneagram type. Then we will do interactive work to identify, or estimate your development stage, and use an inquiry process where you can explore how your stage and type effect your development process. Our intention is to leave you with a clearer understanding of the location and direction of your own growth process and an enhanced ability to work with it consciously. Biography: Our presenter for the evening is Sunil Ahuja, who is also the meetup organizer, and an AEA board member. Sunil, the founder of Integral Transformation Systems, is a development trainer, consultant, and coach. His work focuses on the development of individual capacity across multiple intelligences: cognitive, emotional and spiritual, utilizing the Integral AQAL model, the Enneagram, and methodology...

AEA 2017 Fall Workshop: Beatrice Chestnut this November 4-5, 2017

AEA 2017 Fall Workshop: Beatrice Chestnut this November 4-5, 2017

Beatrice Chestnut presents… The Way of the Arrows: Using the Enneagram Symbol as a Path For Growth Bea is back! Join us for this interactive, ALL NEW workshop November 4 and 5, 2017. As you know, the “work” in the Enneagram is to loosen the grip of our type structure – to move into a fuller, freer life. This starts with getting out of our fixated habits of attention. One of the ways to do that is to take advantage of our connections to other numbers on the diagram – the lines the Enneagram calls the “arrow lines.” You can think of the high side of your connected types as “antidotes” for the habitual tendencies of your main type. For instance, Ones who experience a move to Seven (against the arrow to their “energizing point”) can access a lighter, more playful way of being. This can expand their capacity for relaxation, which can fortify their inner resources for the movement in the direction of the arrow (“resolution point”) to Four, where they can find inspiration for greater creativity and depth of feeling. Twos may learn to get in touch with their needs and feelings at point Four and access more inner power and strength at point Eight. To physically and graphically demonstrate the movement, a floor diagram of the Enneagram will provide some volunteers of each type with an opportunity to experience the movements while the rest of the group will experience this as witnesses and participants in the group experience. The format of this interactive, 2-day workshop is a combination of lecture, demonstrations, type groups, meditation and exercises. It provides information about and an experience of the use of arrow-line points for self-development. The relationship with wings will also be discussed. We will explore how these elements have been viewed in the past, how they are described by important Enneagram-related teachings from Gurdjieff, the Sufis, and others, and how we might usefully experience them in our own personal work. In this workshop you will learn: • How we can unconsciously slide to the low side of our arrow line points and become inspired by the high side of those same points. • How to consciously stretch or expand beyond your type’s focus of attention by using your main type’s wing points and arrow line-connected points. • The history behind the different elements of Enneagram symbol as a model of personal evolution—and revolution. • How to achieve more balance in life by more regularly embodying the gifts and strengths of our wings and arrow-line connected points. Beatrice Chestnut Biography: Beatrice has a Ph.D. in communication and an M.A. in clinical psychology. She studied politics and the mass media at Northwestern University on the way to earning a graduate degree in communication studies. She earned her MA in clinical psychology at the California Institute of Clinical Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. She has been working with and studying the Enneagram system of personality types for twenty-five years, ever since it blew her mind in 1990. In July of 2013 she authored a book, The Complete Enneagram: 27 Paths to Greater Self-Knowledge, about how to become more self-aware using the Enneagram map. She studied the Enneagram system with Helen Palmer and David Daniels in the mid-1990s and completed their teacher certification in...

The Foundation of AEA’s Learning Process The objectives of the basic, recurring classes are to provide students with the chance to take the classes they need and want along the AEA CURRICULUM: DEVELOPMENTAL PROCESS, which is based on three stages of program offerings:  Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3. The various options, taken as the student is able to and as are scheduled across the year, provides an understanding of his/her own personality type, other’s personality types, as well as the Enneagram system as a whole. This understanding supports students in developing healthy personal egos, fulfilling relationships, and more fulfilling lives. Recurring Programs consist of classes and class series taught by AEA Teachers as well as those programs that are sponsored directly by the AEA.
