The Development and Structure of the Enneagram of Personality Types

The Development and Structure of the Enneagram of Personality Types

The Development and Structure of the Enneagram of Personality Types(formerly known as Foundations of the Enneagram of Personality Types) Have you ever wondered why it is so important to you to get things right, or to be in charge or to keep the peace at all costs or (fill in the blank)? Do you ever find that no matter how many times you change your external circumstances – partner, job, friends, town – you end up recreating the same issues? Have you simply ever wondered what makes people “tick” in such varied ways (and just seem to refuse to see the world the way you do)? There is a system of understanding personality from the standpoint of motivation – WHY we do what we do – known as the Enneagram of Personality Types.  If you’re new to this system, you likely stumbled over that word “Enneagram”. Pronounced any-a-gram, it’s a Greek word meaning a nine-pointed diagram. That’s because the Enneagram speaks to 9 basic Personality Types that are diagrammed in a circle. Understanding not only what we and others do, but why we do it, greatly enhances our acceptance and appreciation of ourselves and others. It also provides clear direction for continued growth and development as well as how to get past stuck places in our lives. The theory of the Enneagram says that we come into this life in a state of connection to Essential Qualities of the Life Force and Being (such as Love, Truth, Courage, Wholeness, Innocence, Serenity). But, by necessity, we undergo the socialization process, developing a personality type structure that is a function of our genetic pre-disposition and early childhood experience. This personality structure helps us act effectively as individuals in the world and it also creates a false sense of separation from the Essential Qualities that are always there at our disposal. It sets us up, so to speak, to hyper-focus on one aspect of reality while the totality slips into the background. You can think of the personality type structure as habits of attention and emotion as well as strategies on how to get what we deem as essential to our survival. It is a map that helps us navigate reality but it is not reality itself. Knowing your type sets you on a path of deeper understanding of self and others that can assist you in moving past triggers, blocks and blind spots of personality into a fuller, freer, richer experience of life. In this class we describe the formation of the nine type structures and help you find which one describes you best. We also examine the relationship between the personality self and the inner/core self with its permanent essential qualities of the Life Force and of Being itself.  This class also provides an overview of the paths and practices that lead toward personal development and integration. Methods include teaching, exercises and brief panel interviews with class participants. The Essential Enneagram by Dr. David Daniels MD is used to assist participants to identify their own Enneagram personality type. This basic course is highly recommended as preparation for all of the continuing Enneagram programs. The class is taught in a one day format.     EVENT DETAILS REGISTER When: TBA Time: 9:00am – 5:00pm Where: TBA Cost: $90 per person which...

AEA EVENT-RECAP- 2018 Spring Workshop with Michael Goldberg | April 21-22, 2018

An Enneagram Odyssey: Journey Beyond the Story of your Type Special Guests: Michael Goldberg “Every journey has a secret destination of which the traveler is unaware.” –Martin Buber Deeply rooted in ancient tradition, the Enneagram types are stories that we tell ourselves and each other about how we make our place in the world and what really matters. Ultimately, these stories are about finding our way Home, to who we really are and what we may become. In this practical, interactive workshop, drawing from classical myth and profound stories, Michael offers: • A fresh look at the nature of our Type patterns and the Enneagram itself • Guidance for loosening the habitual patterns of Type so as to become a more imaginative and meaningful teller of your story • A practical frame for working with this approach for oneself, and as a teacher and guide for others • A deeper understanding of where you are in your journey and what may lie ahead Throughout human history, great truths have been passed on through story, for those ready to hear. As Michael says, “The telling of powerful stories is also, in my experience, great fun, with lots of lively interaction fueled by the shock of recognition, and questions and comments as we go. But the adventures hold deep, affecting wisdom, as well as uncanny practical advice.” The first story is Homer’s Odyssey, which recounts the great homecoming of Odysseus. On his ten year journey, Odysseus meets each of the nine ennea-types in exact numerical order. As Michael revealed in his book, Travels with Odysseus, each adventure is a teaching story with a memorable and affecting turn of events; Homer has a startling knack to distill the core of type. Each of Odysseus’s encounters sets up the next, teaching the Enneagram as flow, rather than static boxes. And from Michael’s new book, to be published soon, he will share two magical, psychologically rich and layered, ancient adventures: the first tells how Type patterns come to be; the second is a guide of “what to do” with stuck patterns once you have them. And we all have them! Through dyads and group-as-a-whole discussion, participants can share their real-life stories, insights, memories and experiences that resonate with these ennea-stories. Michael includes lecturettes and mini-panels. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience with the Enneagram. No prior familiarity with, or love of, myth is necessary. Michael Goldberg has taught the Enneagram worldwide for thirty years. He is the author of The 9 Ways of Working and Travels with Odysseus. He consults with the Enneagram to organizations including the Central Intelligence Agency, Honeywell, South African Airways, and TopHuman (China). He has been on over a hundred television and radio programs, including Fox News Channel, CNN, CBC (Canada) and ABC (Australia.) Michael has taught at graduate schools of law, management and psychology. He was an attorney at the now famous US Office of Government Ethics. 9 Paths Through the Eyes of Love Special Guest: Renee Siegel Each of us yearns to be heard, understood and loved. Each of the Enneagram Types may demonstrate these needs differently. In order to get these needs met, we will explore each of the Types ways of attempting to get these needs met. Topics explored will include foundational self-awareness and self-love, unconditional positive regard, loveology and 9 paths through the 5 love languages. In this workshop you will learn: How to identify blind spots and triggers in their communication style. How to identify how their Type has both assets and challenges in getting their needs met for being heard, understood and loved. How to identify one of their love languages. She was originally educated as a Marriage and Family therapist and began to question why people hold onto their patterns of thoughts, feelings, behaviors and illnesses. She is a licensed mental health counselor, licensed massage therapist and certified holistic healthcare practitioner. She was introduced to the Enneagram almost 10 years ago and it was “love at first sight and a game changer”. Since that time she has been an avid student of the Enneagram. She specialized in 3 areas in using the Enneagram: • Integrating Wellness Practices into Treatment • Improving Relationships both personally and professionally • Recovery from Substance and Process Addictions Renee has finished filming an addiction series where she has interviewed all nine types, each having both a substance and process addiction. Introductory Tour of the Types | November 9th from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Presented by Jaye Andres Have you ever wondered why others don’t see things the way you do? How we view the world and respond to it is based on the viewpoints of our personality types and the patterns formed by them, combined with our own unique “essential self”. What is the Enneagram (pronounced Any-a-gram)? It’s a powerful overview of 9 distinct personality types; each with its own strengths, challenges, motivations, and positive paths for growth. Taught worldwide, it crosses gender and cultural lines. What can the Enneagram do for you? Know yourself as never before; learn about others; enhance communication skills; make better decisions; resolve conflicts-internal and external; respond better to challenging situations; improve your relationships. In this 3 hour Introduction, in addition to an overview of the system, you will learn about the motivational core set- up of each of the nine types. And, since there’s no better way to learn than from the types themselves, you will hear from 3 exemplars of each type (via video). By the end of this introduction participants report that they have either found their type, or have it narrowed down to two. For those already familiar with the Enneagram this intro serves as a powerful review and delivers further understanding of the types. This class is $25 as a standalone class, or this class is included in the registration fee for our 2018 Fall Workshop with Russ Hudson, Novemver 10-11.     REGISTER TODAY | Click HERE EVENT DETAILS When: November 9, 2018 Time: 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Where: Christ Church of Ascension (CCA) Episcopal Church | Location: Parish Hall | 4015 E. AEA 2018 FALL Workshop with Russ Hudson | November 10-11, 2018

AEA 2018 FALL Workshop with Russ Hudson | November 10-11, 2018

Russ is back! Join us November 10-11, 2018: Awakening to Our True Minds: Nine Ways of Knowing & Experiencing Reality If you attended Russ’s workshop at the AEA in 2015 on Exploring the Higher Aspects of Being, you know how impactful it was and how beautifully Russ embodied the concept of Presence. This November, Russ will take us deeper into an exploration of the higher mental qualities of the Enneagram Types. While the heart remains central in human transformation; without clear thinking, and without recognizing our unconscious beliefs, the heart is hampered by old conditioning, prejudices, and even delusions. We often hear the spiritual cliché, “You don’t need your head—just follow your heart”. While our caring is important, it alone is not going to address the issues that we face as a society and as a world. We live in a time crying for clear thinking, radical new vision, and the ability to discover new ways of addressing complex problems. This workshop will focus on a clearer understanding of Mind, which will certainly entail the heart and the body, but which will also bring in the core, traditional Enneagram teachings of the Essence (or Spiritual) Qualities of the mental center – known as the “Holy Ideas”. You will learn: How Presence in the head center brings a deeper awareness of the unity (non-duality) of life How this awareness can be a direct experience that opens us to new choices and new freedoms The nine fundamental perspectives of the world when they are no longer distorted by a sense of separation How to connect the 9 higher states of Mind to the normal mental faculties needed to live, love and function well in our lives How, through our recognition and experience of unity, the groundwork is laid for something new to grow Being emotionally reactive is no substitute for being truly heartful, and the difference between these two conditions has a lot to do with our minds. All true realizations are an experience of seeing reality differently. When this occurs, we notice that what we previously believed was at least partially mistaken. So the process of awakening entails being awake enough to see what we have thought and believed, and to be available to a deeper level of mind, just as we seek to be available to a deeper level of heart. We will use teachings, exercises, music, and discussion to deepen our Presence and to explore the interface between our ego consciousness and the realms of freedom and vastness that are our True Nature.   RUSS HUDSON, co-founder, is one of the principal scholars and innovative thinkers in the Enneagram world today. He is President of Enneagram Personality Types, Inc. and co-Founder of The Enneagram Institute. He has been co-teaching the Enneagram Professional Training Programs since 1991, and is a Founding Director and former Vice-President of the International Enneagram Association. He is also co-author of The Wisdom Of The Enneagram, Personality Types (Revised Edition), Understanding the Enneagram (Revised Edition), Discovering Your Personality Type (Revised Edition), and The Power Of The Enneagram (audio tape) and co-author of The Awakened Company. He is on the Board of Advisers for the Enneagram Prison Project. Russ delivers workshops, trainings, and retreats across the globe to thousands of students. He holds a degree in...

AEA SERIES: Habits of Emotions and Defenses

Posted by on Dec 9, 2015 in Past Events | 0 comments

AEA SERIES: Habits of Emotions and Defenses

How would you like to experience increased emotional freedom and less defensiveness? This can be achieved by loosening the habitual, unconscious patterns of your Enneagram personality type. Personality is a self-concept that builds in childhood and is firmly in place by the time we are adults. It’s a highly sophisticated set of beliefs, behaviors and reactions that have been tried out and reinforced over time creating automatic, unconscious patterns and habits. Some of these patterns serve us well, others do not. Our personality type is who we think we are; who we really are is much more. Some of these habits and patterns are mental ones and are the topics explored in the AEA class, Type as False Identification. In this class, we examine the emotional habits and defenses that hold our type structure in place. The objectives of this class are to recognize one’s habits of emotion (known as passions in the Enneagram system) and to deepen our understanding of our type’s defense mechanisms as well as to lessen the need for being defensive. The defense mechanism is an unconscious habit that serves to protect our view of ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. By the time our personality type is firmly in place, we no longer see the world the way IT is, we see it as WE are. The awareness and loosening of our defensive barriers and emotional habits lead to greater spiritual, psychological and emotional freedom. We experience more ease in our life and our relationships. We are able to contact the essential qualities of Being such as Innocence, Balance, Courage and Serenity. Class format is highly interactive and includes exercises, practices, and dialogue that awaken the intuitive knowing of the Inner Observer and qualities of Presence. Topics include the passion, virtue, defense mechanism, projection and avoidance of each of the Enneagram types. Recommended preparation: Students need to be familiar with the Enneagram model by taking F1: The Development and Structure of Enneagram Personality Type or similar preparation.  This class is typically offered in a 6-week small group class in 2-2 ½ hour sessions.     EVENT DETAILS | REGISTER When: TBA Time: 6:30 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. Where: Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, Room TBD Cost: $150 for this 15 hour, six-week course Register by clicking here soon Register by Phone: Contact Sheila at 602-888-1381 | or by...

AEA SPECIAL TOPIC: Moving Beyond the Triggers & Blind Spots of your Personality Presented by Jaye Andres on February 25, 2017

AEA SPECIAL TOPIC: Moving Beyond the Triggers & Blind Spots of your Personality Presented by Jaye Andres on February 25, 2017

Moving Beyond the Triggers & Blind Spots of your Personality Presented by Jaye Andres Do certain people or situations push your buttons? Do you get feedback from others about your behavior that you just don’t understand? Do you keep running into the same issues over and over again in you relationships? Triggers and blind spots could be the cause. Triggers are those things that “set us off” into reactivity. They prevent us from responding to situations in a present, balanced manner. Each of us, because of our particular world view, is predisposed to certain triggers. When someone pushes one of our trigger buttons most of go into automatic patterns of behavior that are counterproductive. Our perception of what is really happening becomes skewed. The tendency is to think the other person caused us to feel what we’re feeling rather than to recognize that we always have a choice in how we respond to any situation. Intricately tied up with triggers are blind spots – those challenging behaviors that others see in us but we don’t. (We can also have blind spots about our positive traits.) Both triggers and blind spots keep us from leading a full, free and rich life. In this highly experiential workshop you will learn to:   Recognize your personal physical cues of being triggered Respond from conscious choice rather than unconscious reactivity  Be present and engaged in life Learn how to interact with others in ways that won’t trigger them Shine the light on your blind spots and move into your strengths   Knowledge of your Enneagram of Personality Type is helpful, but not necessary, for this workshop.   Biography: Jaye Andres, MBA, is a certified Enneagram professional, a “founding mother”, past president and current Executive Director of the Arizona Enneagram Association. As a life coach and consultant, her passion is to assist others in raising their self-awareness and move past limiting beliefs & habits to live a fuller, freer, richer and more peaceful life. She also facilitates workshops with groups and organizations on personality type, team building, conflict resolution and leadership development.  REGISTER HERE EVENT DETAILS When: Saturday, February 25, 2017 Time: 9:00 a.m – 1:00 p.m. Where: Paradise Valley United Methodist Church 4455 E. AEA SPECIAL TOPIC: Exploring the Harmony Triads with Carole Whittaker on March 25, 2017

AEA SPECIAL TOPIC: Exploring the Harmony Triads with Carole Whittaker on March 25, 2017

Exploring the Harmony Triads       Special Guest: Carole Whittaker Many Enneagram teachers and experienced students have observed a strong relationship between Types Two and Five and between Types Four and Seven, lines that would appear to be “hidden” on the Enneagram diagram of personality types.  When represented as an Enneagram diagram  the relationship of Types One-Seven-Four and Types Eight-Five-Two as well as Types Nine-Six-Three appear as three triangles rather than the familiar Nine-Six-Three triangle and One-Four-Two-Eight-Five-Seven “star-like” figure so familiar to the Enneagram of Personality Types.  The observation has become so frequent that Dr. David Daniels has dubbed this the “Harmony Triads.”  What is this observed relationship disclosing?  Might it be a key to transformation beyond Type? In working with students in their experience of the Holy Ideas, we have observed the transformative effect on their lives of experiencing Holy Love, Holy Faith and Holy Hope.  Recently we have seen more clearly the same transformative effect in all of the Harmony Triads of the influence of the Holy Ideas on their experience. These include a deeper and more authentic sense of self, an enhanced sense of  life-force energy, an easing of reactivity resulting in a greater sense of freedom. Are you attracted to deepening these qualities in yourself? This class is an invitation to join in an exploration of the unfolding of human consciousness that includes and transcends Type.  It will include some didactic teaching to get us started and lots of conversation in pairs and small groups.  We will consider some practices that may help to develop capacities for experiencing these higher qualities and we will observe the experience of exemplars in panel interviews.  Given sufficient time, we will consider the Harmony Triads as representing a transition toward both-and consciousness rather than an exclusive either-or, dualistic, consciousness. Although the material in this class is directed toward experienced Enneagram students, everyone is welcome to attend and will benefit from participating in this class. Carole Whittaker, PhD, is an Enneagram Teacher in the Narrative Tradition trained through the Enneagram Professional Training Program with Helen Palmer and David Daniels. In addition to teaching the Enneagram since 1996, Carole has developed an extensive curriculum of Enneagram programs for helping students understand and move beyond their personality type.  Carole is an experienced educator currently specializing in adult spiritual formation, leading retreats for women and providing spiritual direction for individuals. Carole was a founding member of the Arizona Enneagram Association and former member of its Board of Directors.   She is currently a professional member of the AEA.
