AEA SPECIAL TOPIC: Exploring the Harmony Triads with Carole Whittaker on March 25, 2017

Exploring the Harmony Triads       Special Guest: Carole Whittaker Many Enneagram teachers and experienced students have observed a strong relationship between Types Two and Five and between Types Four and Seven, lines that would appear to be “hidden” on the Enneagram diagram of personality types.  When represented as an Enneagram diagram  the relationship of Types One-Seven-Four and Types Eight-Five-Two as well as Types Nine-Six-Three appear as three triangles rather than the familiar Nine-Six-Three triangle and One-Four-Two-Eight-Five-Seven “star-like” figure so familiar to the Enneagram of Personality Types.  The observation has become so frequent that Dr. David Daniels has dubbed this the “Harmony Triads.”  What is this observed relationship disclosing?  Might it be a key to transformation beyond Type? In working with students in their experience of the Holy Ideas, we have observed the transformative effect on their lives of experiencing Holy Love, Holy Faith and Holy Hope.  Recently we have seen more clearly the same transformative effect in all of the Harmony Triads of the influence of the Holy Ideas on their experience. These include a deeper and more authentic sense of self, an enhanced sense of  life-force energy, an easing of reactivity resulting in a greater sense of freedom. Are you attracted to deepening these qualities in yourself? This class is an invitation to join in an exploration of the unfolding of human consciousness that includes and transcends Type.  It will include some didactic teaching to get us started and lots of conversation in pairs and small groups.  We will consider some practices that may help to develop capacities for experiencing these higher qualities and we will observe the experience of exemplars in panel interviews.  Given sufficient time, we will consider the Harmony Triads as representing a transition toward both-and consciousness rather than an exclusive either-or, dualistic, consciousness. Although the material in this class is directed toward experienced Enneagram students, everyone is welcome to attend and will benefit from participating in this class. Carole Whittaker, PhD, is an Enneagram Teacher in the Narrative Tradition trained through the Enneagram Professional Training Program with Helen Palmer and David Daniels. In addition to teaching the Enneagram since 1996, Carole has developed an extensive curriculum of Enneagram programs for helping students understand and move beyond their personality type.  Carole is an experienced educator currently specializing in adult spiritual formation, leading retreats for women and providing spiritual direction for individuals. Carole was a founding member of the Arizona Enneagram Association and former member of its Board of Directors.   She is currently a professional member of the AEA. AEA Series: The Virtues | April 4-May 9, 2017 | Tuesday evenings

Explore the Virtues of Your Heart… How do serenity, humility, truth and balance operate in your life? What about nonattachment, courage, sobriety, innocence and right action? How does hope, faith, and love show up in your life? Discover practical ways to work through the barriers to spiritual freedom, thus, opening the path to maturity, individuation, and higher consciousness. The Virtues described by the Enneagram are qualities of the life force and are experienced in everyday life when our life force is well balanced. The Virtues are always present even though we may not have direct experience of them, particularly when we are in the reactivity of our passion. This class works with identifying the experience of the passion, and with relaxing into the contraction that holds it in place, instead of fighting it or fleeing from it. You will accomplish a deep, personal examination of your own emotional pattern and its conversion to the corresponding virtue through exercises, meditation practices, and dialogue. Participation in this class requires that students are familiar with the Enneagram system and have developed a capacity for inner observation. Ideal preparation includes the AEA classes identified for Stage 1 and the Barriers to Spiritual Freedom Series. It is typically presented in six, 2½ hour weekly sessions.     EVENT DETAILS | REGISTER HERE When: April 4-May 9, 2017 Time: 6:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m Where: Paradise Valley United Methodist Church | Room H2 4455 E Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253 Cost: $150 for this 15 hour, six-week course; To apply for a Scholarship, click HERE to attend. AEA SPECIAL TOPIC: Take Off…Soar…Land: You are Going to Need Wings for That! with Kathryn Grant on April 22, 2017

AEA SPECIAL TOPIC: Take Off…Soar…Land: You are Going to Need Wings for That! with Kathryn Grant on April 22, 2017

Take Off…Soar…Land: You are Going to Need Wings for That! Special Guest: Kathryn Grant The Enneagram is about movement. It challenges us to ask ourselves questions and hints at possible answers. Wings, the style on either side of our home style, exemplify one of these inherent movements. Some Enneagram teachers teach that we have one wing, some teach that we have two, others dismiss the theory completely. With one wing, we fly in circles, if at all. No wings? We never get off the ground. Two wings, strong with conscious exercise, are necessary. Oscar Ichazo taught that our style is formed by the tension between our wings. No matter where we reside our wings are, in many ways, opposites of each other. We often feel stretched and pulled along the arc between our clockwise and counter-clockwise edges, and usually favor one over the other. Our underused wing is our shadow – and who knows what lurks there! In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to experience this stretch and identify your helpful wing and your more shadowy wing. And then devise a plan, and create an awareness to strengthen both wings. For only then can you take off, soar and land! The benefits of attending this workshop are: Learn about the importance of your wing styles Physically experience the differing energies that these spaces hold for you What may have been “fuzzy” understanding becomes a clear, body experience Biography: Kathryn Grant, has studied the Enneagram since 1994, Certified with Jerome Wagner, PhD. Loyola University, Chicago and is currently an Associate, co-teaching with Jerry in this certification program, and is an IEA Accredited Professional. She has studied with numerous Enneagram experts, is a Spiritual Director, and Certified Coach. She served both the SoCal and NorCal chapters of the IEA. Currently in her sixth year on the IEA Global Board – five years as conference chair. She has presented at four Conferences, developed a series of workshops, and is an authorized teacher of Michael Goldberg’s Travels With Odysseus. AEA SPECIAL TOPIC: Managing Conflict by Type with Renee Siegel on June 10, 2017

Managing Conflict by Type Special Guest: Renee Siegel We all have encounters with others where we do not agree with that other person, even if we care for them a great deal. We can be guaranteed that at some point in our lives, we will have this experience. Oftentimes, conflict arises as a result of this disagreement or not “seeing eye to eye”, and it does not seem like we will be able to see it through. Some of us are more comfortable with conflict than others. Conflict is actually one of the results of being relational. Conflict in relationships is not limited to one type of relationship such as with your spouse or significant other. Parents and children, siblings, friends, co-workers, in fact anyone you have a relationship with can become potentially someone that you have conflict with. Although conflict may be difficult for some, moving through it or coming to some sort of resolution, even if it is agreeing to disagree is important. One of the many benefits of studying and employing our understanding of the Enneagram in our lives is that is provides information about type or character structure and the somewhat predictable patterns of thinking, feeling and doing. In this workshop we will explore how each type either moves toward or away from conflict or perhaps doesn’t budge at all. Biography: Renee Siegel has been an integrative wellness provider for over 35 years. She was originally educated as a Marriage and Family therapist and began to question why people hold onto their patterns of thoughts, feelings, behaviors and illnesses. She is a licensed mental health counselor, licensed massage therapist and certified holistic healthcare practitioner. She was introduced to the Enneagram almost 10 years ago and it was “love at first sight and a game changer”. Since that time she has been an avid student of the Enneagram. She specialized in 3 areas in using the Enneagram: • Integrating Wellness Practices into Treatment • Improving Relationships both personally and professionally • Recovery from Substance and Process Addictions Renee has finished filming an addiction series where she has interviewed all nine types, each having both a substance and process addiction. She describes the enneagram as the “blueprint for health one can utilize when understanding the underlying energetic patterns that distract us from our journey in returning to wholeness.” EVENT DETAILS | When: Saturday, June 10, 2017 Time: 1:00 p.m – 5:00 p.m. Where: Paradise Valley United Methodist Church 4455 E. AEA Meetup July 20, 2017

AEA Meetup July 20, 2017

AEA Meetup You might wonder, “What is a “Meetup?” Wikipedia of course has an excellent definition: “Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest.” Each month a different topic will be explored. Join us for our next Meetup on July 20, 2017 with Sunil Ahuja on Personal Development: Integrating the Enneagram and Spiral Dynamics Join us for an interactive meetup to learn how these two systems can intersect and enhance personal development! The Enneagram is primarily seen as a “horizontal” system, exploring the characteristics of different personality types. However, its true power lies as a path of personal development. David Daniels and Russ Hudson have referred to this. A.H. Almaas has explored this in detail as an integral aspect of his Diamond Approach system. Last May, Deborah Ooten presented a talk to our meetup on how a “vertical” development system called Spiral Dynamics can integrate with the Enneagram to provide further insight into our own personality and development process. Think of “horizontal” as a system that has buckets that are distinct, but not, in any way, better than each other. In “vertical” systems, we move from one level to the next, and at each level we experience expanding capacity. We all intuitively understand that we grow, and that we are not quite the same person we were 10, or 5, or even a year ago. What most of us don’t know is that the process of adult development has been studied and researched by a number of teachers and researchers along different dimensions. Ken Wilber refers to these dimensions as “Lines” of development. We develop along cognitive, emotional, spiritual, moral, and many other lines. The second critical thing to understand is that we develop in “Stages.” The development process does not occur in a straight line, but more like a step function. When our life conditions change, we have to grow to meet those conditions. When our capacities now meet our external conditions, we can plateau and settle for a while, till the universe demands our next spurt. Spiral Dynamics is the system that Ken Wilber chose to use as a example of the development process in many of his books. While primarily a “Values” line, it describes cognitive, emotional, and other aspects of each stage, and so is a great introductory model to start looking at adult development. We will spend some time reviewing each stage of development, and how each stage integrates with each enneagram type. Then we will do interactive work to identify, or estimate your development stage, and use an inquiry process where you can explore how your stage and type effect your development process. Our intention is to leave you with a clearer understanding of the location and direction of your own growth process and an enhanced ability to work with it consciously. Biography: Our presenter for the evening is Sunil Ahuja, who is also the meetup organizer, and an AEA board member. Sunil, the founder of Integral Transformation Systems, is a development trainer, consultant, and coach. His work focuses on the development of individual capacity across multiple intelligences: cognitive, emotional and spiritual, utilizing the Integral AQAL model, the Enneagram, and methodology...

The Development and Structure of the Enneagram of Personality Types | September 9, 2017

The Development and Structure of the Enneagram of Personality Types(formerly known as Foundations of the Enneagram of Personality Types) This class provides a thorough groundwork for understanding and utilizing the Enneagram of Personality model.  Following the path of human development from early childhood, we describe the formation of personality type as habits of attention and emotion and the strategies that hold them in place in order to form an individual self-reflective consciousness. We also examine the relationship between the personality self and the inner/core self with its permanent essential qualities of the life force (the Virtues) and of Being itself (the Holy Ideas.)  This class also provides an overview of the paths and practices that lead toward personal integration. Understanding ourselves as well as others from this perspective greatly enhances our acceptance and appreciation of ourselves and others and provides clear direction for continued growth and development. Methods include teaching, exercises and brief panel interviews with class participants. The Essential Enneagram by Dr. David Daniels MD is used to assist participants in identifying their own Enneagram personality Type. This basic course is highly recommended as preparation for all of the continuing Enneagram classes. It is suitable for beginners as well as those who already have some familiarity with the Enneagram. This class is taught in a one day format.       EVENT DETAILS | REGISTER HERE When: September 9, 2017 Time: 9:00am – 5:00pm Where: Paradise Valley United Methodist Church Room H-1 | 4455 E. AEA SERIES: Type as False Identification | September 20- October 25, 2017 | Wednesday afternoons

AEA SERIES: Type as False Identification | September 20- October 25, 2017 | Wednesday afternoons

Type as False Identification Personality is “who I think I am.” It is a self-concept that builds in childhood and, once formed, is so much “who we are” that we do not recognize it as a highly sophisticated construct built from imagination, imitation, and a need to be appreciated. Our identifications protect us from feelings of anxiety, discomfort and uncertainty about facing the unknown, yet limit our freedom to experience and act from a truer, inner self. Jesus talks about dying to self, and it is this false self he is referring to, so that we can live true to the person we are meant to be. The objectives of this course are to clarify and deepen our understanding that personality is a structure that is formed and held in place by habits of attention and to develop and strengthen one’s awareness and experience of the inner observer. The format is highly interactive and includes exercises, practices, and dialogue on the habits of attention, idealization, identification, secondary gain, stress and security points that reinforce the structure of type. This is the first class in the Barriers to Spiritual Freedom Series, by the Arizona Enneagram Association. It is presented in six two-hour sessions. EVENT DETAILS | REGISTER HERE When: September 20- October 25, 2017 Time: 3:00 to 5:30 p.m., each Wednesday evening for 6 weeks Where: Paradise Valley United Methodist Church | Room TBD 4455 E.
